The inspiration for this gender-neutral nursery came from the color and material contrast found in sea glass and sand. The combination of soft greens and warm beiges helped establish a palette that feels balanced and restrained, aligning with the family’s goal of creating a space that is warm and modern without feeling stark. A subtle coastal influence was introduced through texture and tone rather than overt references, allowing the design to remain cohesive with the rest of the home. Since the family chose not to find out the baby’s gender, the room was designed to feel equally appropriate for a boy or a girl, with a palette and overall aesthetic that will continue to work as the space evolves over time.
Longevity was an important consideration throughout the design process. The family wasn’t certain this would always remain a child’s room, so it needed the flexibility to transition into a guest room or office in the future. That thinking informed the more permanent elements, including the wallpaper, lighting, and drapery. The result is a space that feels sophisticated yet still playful, soft and peaceful without leaning too far into a traditional “nursery” look.
With a tonal palette like this, texture plays a critical role in keeping the room from feeling flat. The grasscloth wallpaper, with its linen-like quality, adds depth to the walls and shifts subtly with the light throughout the day. The wool rug brings in another layer of softness underfoot, making the space feel comfortable and lived in. Even the woven storage pieces and light fixture were chosen with that same intention, so the room feels layered and cohesive without appearing overly styled.
Balance was also key in pulling everything together. The beige and cream elements were carefully selected to share the same neutral undertone, creating a consistent backdrop for the sage tones layered throughout the space. Those green hues are repeated across the drapery, textiles, artwork, rug, and smaller accents, allowing the eye to move naturally through the room without any one moment feeling too dominant.
As the room came together, it became less about any single standout piece and more about how everything worked in combination. The crib’s clean white finish keeps the space feeling fresh, while the raffia-wrapped dresser introduces warmth and texture that softens the overall look. It’s this balance between simplicity and detail that gives the room its character.
