The Wool Rug Roundup: Nurseries & Kids' Rooms

There's a reason designers keep coming back to wool - it's soft and plush underfoot, naturally stain resistant, and it doesn't shed microplastics every time your child crawls across it. A good wool rug is also an heirloom (beautiful antique wool rugs are highly coveted and worth thousands), so your baby’s wool rug could potentially move from nursery to big-kid room to college apartment without ever looking out of place.

When designing spaces for babies and kids, I try to avoid polyester rugs because they (sadly) shed microplastics and off-gas chemicals into the space for years. Kids spend so much time on the floor throughout their childhood so I personally like to prioritize natural fiber rugs when possible. While cotton and jute are also natural fiber rugs (and I do source these occasionally too), wool is the most plush and the most durable. The fibers naturally resist soil and moisture, so spills tend to sit on the surface rather than soaking in, which feels like a small miracle the first time a cup tips over. It is also naturally flame resistant without added treatments, hypoallergenic (unless there is a specific wool allergy in the family of course), and supportive of a comfortable temperature year-round. From a design standpoint, it holds its structure well, so you do not end up with that flattened, worn look that so many synthetic rugs develop. Instead, it continues to look like it belongs in the room, even as everything else around it evolves.

One quick note before you commit to a wool rug for your child’s room: wool rugs shed for at least the first six months. This is normal, it does slow down, and for most people it's a completely reasonable trade-off for a rug that is naturally stain resistant, free of synthetic off-gassing, and built to last decades. If shedding is a dealbreaker, cotton and jute are both excellent natural fiber alternatives.
