Non-Toxic Wallpaper Faves: Plaids & Checks

When you're picking out wallpaper for your nursery or kid's room, you're probably focused on finding the perfect colors and patterns to bring the whole space together. But there’s something else that’s worth keeping in mind too: what the wallpaper is made of. Many popular wallpapers are printed with inks or finished with coatings that can release VOCs (volatile organic compounds) into your baby’s space, which may affect indoor air quality over time. The good news is that there are plenty of beautiful, more thoughtful options out there that are just as lovely, if not more so, once you know where to look. I’m always on the lookout for safer, non-toxic wallpapers and I’m excited to share some of my favorite finds. Here are a few plaid and check options that give that timeless, traditional, tailored look.

non-toxic low-voc plaid and checkered peel-n-stick wallpapers

  1. This warm oat and sand plaid wallpaper is a timeless neutral that adds just enough structure without stealing the show. It's perfect for a boy’s nursery and would age well all the way to teen-hood!

  2. Deep navy and slate tones give this one a vintage prep feel with a modern mood. It would look so handsome paired with warm cognac browns and creamy whites.

  3. The light greige plaid feels quiet and refined. It's an elegant backdrop that works beautifully with layered neutrals and wood finishes.

  4. This creamy french blue check is sweet and airy, like a baby blanket in wallpaper form. Pair it with soft whites, light maple, and a pale blues for a fresh cottage look.

  5. The washed taupe and charcoal tones give this one a slightly rustic, well-worn charm. It would be darling with vintage finds and cozy layers.

  6. This pale blue gingham wallpaper is classic baby in the best way. It’s more whimsical and fresh (bright white as opposed to cream), especially when paired with whites, brushed brass, and playful touches (red would be a great offset too).

  7. A crisp navy and white windowpane check brings contrast and a tailored look. It's lovely in a traditional-meets-modern nursery with clean lines and cozy textures.

  8. Rich tan and espresso tones give this plaid wallpaper warmth and depth. It leans a little moodier and pairs beautifully with olive green or ochre accents.

  9. This soft sagey khaki check is subtle and sweet, with a vintage cottage feel. It’s a beautiful choice for a room filled with handmade heirlooms and linen textures.
